British Flowers Week – Dahlia. Inspiration by Liz Inigo-Jones

DAHLIA

I know I said yesterday that Sweet Pea’s were my favourite flower, so I can’t make that statement again…but the Dahlia is definitely my nearly favourite flower…To quote E.E. Cummings “the earth laughs in flowers” – well I think that most applies to the Dahlia. A cheer giving bloom if ever I saw one…

From Blue Sky Flowers: Apart from purple, there is a Dahlia to match pretty much every colour scheme you can think of …! I think they are the quintessential summer flower, bright, breezy, colourful and, in some cases, enormous. Sure, there are the everyday normal sized flower heads but the extra special ones are bigger than your head – really!

Spiky, softly rounded, pointy or spidery – Dahlias come in lots of different sizes and the height of their season is short but very loud petering out towards Autumn with more subtle shades. It is a real ‘get them while they are hot’ sort of flower, blink and you miss them. They can add enormous power to a mixed display but are just as amazing on their own, adding a riot of colour where necessary.

Delicious dahlia’s…are they your favourite bloom?
