Another day another instalment of our “Advent of Flowers” feature by the lovely Liz Inigo Jones of Blue Sky Flowers. Our green and pleasant land is abundant with beautiful blooms throughout the year, so there’s no need to compromise when it comes to winter wedding flowers. Here Liz takes you through some of the varieties you might want to consider if you’re getting married during the festive season:
13 Berries
There are many kinds of berries around in the winter, but Ilex (Winterberry) is one of the most popular, its iconic straight stems and bright red berries are dramatic on their own. Poisonous to both humans and pets, the berries should be cleared up as soon as they fall and kept away from children.
14 Heather (Calluna / Erica)
Pretty, rustic plants are available all year round and can be used within smaller flower displays very effectively and are great in buttonholes!
15 Grevillea
In this case it is an unashamed seasonal shock of golden foliage but in its natural state it is a pretty, Antipodean feathery foliage that creates movement in any flower display – it can also have bright pink or yellow calyx type flowers.
16 Cyclamen
These little flowers resemble tiny fairy dresses, so soft and floaty are they dancing above their dark green leaves, in white, shades of pink and red. They are also available as cut stems but can be temperamental to keep and use – best kept in the ground probably.
17 Holly
That old Christmas favourite never grows tired, an amazingly strong foliage with red berries if you are lucky and particular spiky leaves if you aren’t!
18 Sarcococca (Christmas Box)
This glossy evergreen has ‘insignificant’ tiny but fragrant white flowers from December to February but is probably best used for making door wreaths as it is very hardy.
Such stunning textures and colours! What would you feature in your winter bouquet?
